Wake up to a healthy digestion

Day 11 Yang Sheng

Take a look at the organ clock below and check in with yourself — what does it look like for you during this time? What activities are you doing?

In Five Element Theory, the Small Intestine is associated with the Fire element. As the yang organ of Fire, it is prone to imbalance when assimilation is weak, often showing up as bloating, gas, or abdominal pain.

The therapeutic approach focuses on purging and clearing the Small Intestine meridian in Summer, or whenever digestion feels incomplete — which can lead to lower‑abdominal distention, appendicitis, or mental restlessness. The Small Intestine is also influenced by the quality of your thoughts; positive or negative thinking can transform into corresponding emotions.

Small intestine energy peaks at 1pm - 3pm, which is when the small intestine meridian is on duty. This is the time for:
△ digestion
△ assimilation
△ mental reset
△ clear undigested throughts and emotions

How to nourish your small intestine Qi: Drink enough water throughout the day, as dehydration can affect this meridian during its peak hours. Eating earlier allows digestion and assimilation to complete during this time. When undigested food or emotional residue accumulates, it can create mental restlessness, vulnerable thoughts, or even feelings of abandonment.

If you have a sluggish and slow digestive system, this is an ideal practice to do first thing in the morning to get your digestion moving in the right way! One of the key to having a healthy small intestine is to move the heart fire down to nourish and build energy in the lower dantian. We will also finish with a dantian activation medtiation practice to cultivate more energy in the lower dantian.
